I discovered 61 Local through the LocalRootsNYC Supper Club. 61 Local describes itself as a public house with locally crafted food but it’s a lot more than that. Owner Dave Liatti designed the space, which was a former townhouse and garage in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. Original elements were retained as much as possible, including an old fireplace and the exposed brick walls. The space is designed, but not overly controlled, Liatti says.  He told me that he was inspired by a need to bridge the disconnect between the thoughtfulness and creativity that goes into food and drink and the environment in which they are consumed.  To that end, the place is open and breezy, with lofty ceilings, wooden furniture and whimsical details. The lamps above the bar are made from repurposed Carboys, used for home brewing.

Attention to craftsmanship is apparent, from the lights to the knife rack to the bathroom signs. The food is curated by Chris Munsey, who has worked at Murray’s Cheese Shop, Astor Wines and Dixon Farmstand. Be sure to try the beers and ales, all made locally in the region. Liatti can often be found behind the bar and will chat with you about the flavors and crafting of the brews.

Liatti designed the wooden Local Roots NYC logo, installed just across from the bar.

Liatti also designed the knife rack, featuring knives from Cut Brooklyn–beautiful local, hand-made cutlery. He took the time to point out the logo on the knife, the wooden handle and the design of the metal rivets.

Each of these wall lamps has a different design

61 Local also hosts community events, like the Local Roots NYC Community Shared Agriculture program, live poetry readings, filmscreenings and cooking clubs.

This was the sign on the bathroom door, which just made me smile.
